The Gout Diet

Arthritis is a category of diseases that mainly affect and cause damage to the joints of the body. There are more than 100 forms of arthritis. Among its most common types, include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. Gout accounts for approximately 5 percent of all cases of arthritis. In the United States, 50 million are known to suffer from this disease. Gout has always been associated with sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy diet, as well as with those who smoke and drink alcohol heavily. This painful condition is more common in individuals who are above 45 years of age. More men suffer from gout attacks compared to women. Family history has been associated with gout.

People who are diagnosed with this condition have a parent, siblings or other immediate family members who also suffer from gout attacks. However, diet has been the most common cause of gout. Diagnosing and managing this disease promptly is vital in order to prevent the condition from worsening, as this can possibly lead to immobility and disability. Gout occurs due to abnormally high levels of uric acid circulating in the blood. Therefore, managing this health condition is mainly directed in lowering the levels of uric acid. People suffering from this condition, can greatly benefit from gout diet. This kind of diet can help the people in preventing gout attacks and reducing its severity.

A gout diet typically decreases one’s intake of foods that are rich in purines. Purine-rich foods include animal products like liver, herring, anchovies, mackerel, red meat, and fatty fish. Shrimps, crabs, lobsters and other seafood must also be avoided since it contains rich amounts of purines. There are also certain vegetables, which should be avoided since these contain significant amounts of purines like cauliflowers and spinach. Other purine-rich foods include grouse, mutton, veal, bacon, turkey, partridge, trout, goose, haddock, and scallops.

Instead of getting protein from animal meat, people with gout can consume more plants that are adequate sources of protein. Examples of these are beans and legumes. People with gout are recommended to avoid a diet which high in protein, and fats. The ideal diet for individuals with gout is a low-purine, low fat, and moderate-protein diet. Alcohol must certainly be avoided, as well as cigarette smoking. Since these interfere with the body’s ability to effectively eliminate uric acid from the system. Rehydration is also essential since lack of fluids in the body makes the person more prone to have gout attacks.

However, natural treatment for gout, which has proven to be effective by most research studies, should not replace pharmacological treatments. These alternative gout treatments should be used in combination with the medical regimens as prescribed by the client’s physician. Drugs used to manage gout attacks are found to decrease the need for dietary restrictions. Dietary modification and other natural gout remedies are best for people cannot tolerate gout medications.

Remedies for Arthritis

Arthritis is considered to be one of the most dreaded diseases that can lead to permanent disability. It is a degenerative joint disease that targets the musculoskeletal system, specifically the joints. There are over 100 different forms of this disease. Among its many common afflictions, include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. Arthritis is a chronic condition that results to damage to joints of the body.  This health problem is often related to aging, People who are above 45 years of age are at higher risk for developing this chronic disorder. Other risk factors for arthritis include older women, smoking and tobacco use, chronic alcohol drinking, injuries, infection whether viral or bacterial, family history, sedentary lifestyle and obesity.

This condition is usually characterized by joint pain and stiffness. Arthritis may also be accompanied with fever and chills.  The joints typically appear swollen and reddish. The pain associated with this condition may appear gradually or sometimes suddenly. Other symptoms associated with this disorder are swollen lymph nodes, anorexia, weight loss, and fatigue. Pain and discomfort usually vary from person to person. During activities, the pain around the affected joints increases, and also after each activity. Common joints affected in arthritis include the hips, knees, wrists, fingers and toes.

The treatment for arthritis solely depends on the specific type of arthritis present. Accurate diagnosis should be done first so that the chance for a successful treatment is increased. Pharmacological treatments for arthritis include NSAIDs or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen, aspirin and naproxen, glucocorticoids, anti-malarial drugs, sulfasalazine, methotrexate, azathioprine, leflunomide, minocycline, gout medications, and cyclosporine. People suffering from this condition can also benefit not only from medications, but also from a number of remedies for pain, which have been proven to be effective by experts.

Over the years, many have claimed the effectiveness of the use of certain extracts from plants and fruits in providing pain relief in the case of arthritis. One example is the mixture of extracts from avocado and soybean. Localized pain and joint stiffness can be reduced and cured through the use of the extract. With this, the use of pain medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs is no longer needed. Avocado and soybean extract function by decreasing the inflammation and providing aid in the healing process. Another remedy for arthritis involves the use of glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate. These have been proven to significantly reduce the pain, joint stiffness, and edema or swelling of the affected areas,

Other natural arthritis remedies include relaxation techniques like meditation and yoga. Acupuncture has been identified by the World Health Organization to be effective in relieving pain and treating at least 40 health problems which include arthritis. People suffering from arthritis can also benefit from various physical therapies including massage, Massage can help improve the circulation in the body, promoting repair and decreasing the stiffness. Maintaining a desirable weight by eating healthily and exercising regularly can greatly help those who are diagnosed with this health condition.

Relaxation Tips for Kids

People can greatly benefit from relaxation, as with meditation and recreation. With relaxation, there is low tension with the person’s emotional state. In this state, there is an absence of arousal, which often comes from sources like anxiety, anger, and fear. Relaxation techniques involve several strategies that help a person attain a state of calmness, and therefore reduce levels of stress. Relaxation techniques have various health benefits. These techniques help in decreasing muscle tension, lower blood pressure, decrease the heart and respiratory rate. The brain structure, which is involved in this mental state, is the frontal and parietal cortex.

Over the years, research studies have been conducted indicating the close relationship between chronic stress and physical and emotional health. The first relaxation technique, which has been proven effective in stress reduction, is meditation. Among the many problems that can somehow be solved by relaxation techniques include anger management, anxiety and panic attacks, heart problems, depression, migraine attacks, hypertension, insomnia, and pain and stress management. Relaxation techniques can improve the overall well-being of an individual. With relaxation, the functioning of the immune system, as well as other systems of the body, is improved.

In the present days, adults are not the only ones who can greatly benefit from relaxation techniques. Even children are exposed to daily stressful situations. Problems at home and in school can significantly affect their well-being. Therefore, teaching them several relaxation techniques is important. Learning these strategies will help them cope up with the tensions that are coming from the inevitable challenges and problems that they may face as they grow up. Good relaxation techniques have been identified by experts, which are designed to suit the needs of children.

Certain relaxation techniques referred to as formal and passive relaxation exercises, are performed while sitting still or lying quietly which also involves minimal movement. Deep breathing can help children relax by decreasing their respirations, heartbeat, and maintaining a normal blood pressure. The child is instructed to inhale and hold his or her breath for a few minutes and release it slowly. Playing the favorite music of the child can soothe the mind and body of this child. A particular tune, hymn, or instrumental piece can fight stress and provide distractions for the child. This will allow the child to relax.

Other relaxation techniques for children include meditation, laughter, toe tensing, massage, imagery, having adequate rest in between activities, e4xposure to binaural sounds, and power nap. Children can also benefit from a technique known as introvert. However, this relaxation technique is oftentimes difficult for children. It requires the child to reflect on the current situation which is causing him or her to be anxious and stressed. The child should exert an effort in identifying the actual cause of the problem. Children can do any relaxation technique whichever they prefer. All these techniques have one thing in common, which is to empty one’s mind, allowing the person to think of nothing, and relax his or her mind and body.

Osteoporosis Treatment

Osteoporosis is known to be the leading cause of fractures in adults above 45 years of age. An estimated 75 million of people across the globe particularly in the United States, Europe and Japan are diagnosed with this condition. Approximately 9 million fractures associated with osteoporosis have been identified, in which 1.9 million are hip fractures and 1.4 million are fractures of the backbone. Osteoporosis is a condition in which there is a significant decrease in the bone mineral density or BMD. It is characterized by a decrease in the density of the bone, thereby decreasing its strength. This leads to bone fragility, subjecting the bones to frequent injuries and fractures. Risk factors of osteoporosis include women who are over 45 years old, have smaller body structures, history of taking certain medications and having close family members who also suffer with the same health condition.

Osteoporosis is a silent disease since no particular signs and symptoms attributed with this condition can be easily noticed. This health condition does not usually produce signs and symptoms. The pain and discomfort present for people who suffer from osteoporosis are due to fractures. These fractures resulted from the decrease in bone density. Lower back pain and discomfort is the most common symptom experienced by people who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis. Those with this condition experience fractures even to simple activities that usually do not cause fractures to healthy individuals. Diagnosing this condition is performed through medical history, diagnostic examinations like X-rays, a thorough physical assessment and evaluation of signs and symptoms which are both previously and recently experienced.

The goal of treatment and management for osteoporosis is to prevent fractures and other injuries that can be a result of a decrease in bone strength and density. Early detection and prompt treatment is important to prevent further injuries associated with this condition. Preventive measures that must be taken by people suffering from this condition include lifestyle changes and strict adherence to therapeutic regimen recommended by the physician. Lifestyle modification involves healthy diet, regular exercise and adequate rest and sleep. Cigarette smoking cessation and abstaining from alcohol are very important steps in lifestyle modification for people suffering from osteoporosis. When planning for physical activities, it must be kept in mind that bones are still fragile and therefore, activities, which must be part of the exercise program, must not be that intense and rigid. The client must be able to tolerate the form of exercise.

There is a range of osteoporosis treatments in the form of medications, which include Actonel, Boniva, Fosamax, Reclast, Evista, Forteo, Fortical, Miacalcin, and Prolia. The diet of individuals with this condition must contain high amounts of calcium and vitamin D. Examples of calcium-rich foods include milk, yogurt, broccoli, cauliflower, salmon, tofu and green leafy vegetables. Calcium supplements are beneficial for cases of osteoporosis. Vitamin D must also be taken since this vitamin aids in the absorption of calcium from the circulation into the bones. A healthy diet and proper exercise are proven to be effective in preventing osteoporosis, as well as in reducing the risks for having fractures in case osteoporosis has already been diagnosed.

Natural Insomnia Treatments

Insomnia is a sleeping disorder in which a person has trouble sleeping or falling and staying asleep on a regular basis. In the present days, more than 30 percent of the population is suffering from insomnia. Studies show that about 55 percent of people who are over 60 years old, frequently experience insomnia. This sleeping difficulty is more often a sign and symptom than a disease itself. Therefore, it is important to report this immediately so that medical experts will be able to identify whether there is an underlying pathological condition causing the sleeping difficulty. This disorder is more common in women, occurring 40 percent more often than in men. Insomnia is classified into three types, transient, acute and chronic insomnia. Difficulty falling asleep is often a symptom of anxiety disorders and clinical depression.

Possible risk factors for insomnia include the use of psychoactive stimulants, fluoroquinolone antibiotic drugs, hormone imbalances, disturbances in the circadian rhythm, abuse of over-the-counter medications or prescribed sleeping aids, poor sleep hygiene, and physical exercises especially to athletes. Certain medical conditions are associated with insomnia. These include Wittmaack–Ekbom syndrome, Periodic Limb Movement Disorder or PLMD, neurological disorders, history of traumatic brain injuries, rheumatoid and other forms of arthritis and thyroid problems. Psychological disorders like major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and dementia can cause insomnia. Nightmares, REM behavior disorder, sleepwalking, night terrors and other disruptive sleep events can usually lead to insomnia.

People suffering from insomnia can benefit from several natural insomnia treatments that have long been proven to be effective. Relaxation is known to effectively increase one’s sleeping hours. Relaxation techniques can also help a person fall asleep easier and faster. People who are more relaxed are more likely to feel energetic and well rested when they wake up early in the morning. Some examples of relaxation techniques include guided imagery or visualization, meditation, yoga and progressive muscle relaxation. Herbal extracts can also be beneficial in insomniacs. Valerian is an herb which is used to manage insomnia. It has been widely used in certain countries including Italy, France, Germany and Switzerland. Other herbs include chamomile extracts, kava, lemon balm, ashwagandha, and passionflower. Traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine are also helpful in people who have difficulties in falling asleep.

Diet also plays a major role in managing symptoms of insomnia. It is important for people who are suffering from this sleeping disorder to consume healthier foods. Caffeine must be avoided as well, together with cigarette smoking cessation. A diet high in carbohydrates such as whole grain breads and cereals before bedtime can help the person fall asleep in no time. However, it is important to keep in mind that food which contains high amounts of sugar should be avoided. People can also benefit from consuming magnesium-rich foods. Music is also considered as an effective insomnia treatment, especially slow and relaxing music. Other common natural treatments for insomnia are acupuncture, aromatherapy, exercise, and acupuncture.

Natural Insomnia Cures

More and more people nowadays are at an increased risk of having insomnia. This is more likely due to the nature of most occupations common in the present days. More than 30 percent of the population is known to experience sleeping difficulties. This condition is twice more common in men than in women. The reason behind this is that women are subjected to hormonal changes unlike men. It is characterized by difficulties in initiating or maintaining sleep. Insomnia causes a person to have an impaired daytime functioning. It affects persons of all ages, although the chances of suffering from this condition increase as a person ages. Three common classifications of insomnia include transient, short term, long term and chronic insomnia. With this, people may manifest daytime fatigue and drowsiness, sudden mood changes, lack of focus and concentration, anergia, anxiety, and headaches.

Usually, insomnia is brought about by stressful situations and factors such as working in different shifts, jet lag, drug abuse, cigarette smoking, and excessive caffeine and alcohol intake. Oftentimes the use of certain medications can lead to insomnia. Examples of these are fluoroquinolone antibiotics and psychoactive drugs or stimulants like cocaine, nicotine, amphetamines, methylphenidate, MDMA and modafinil. Inevitable life events including death of a loved one, separation or divorce, losing a job, and preparing for an examination, make a person susceptible to this sleeping disorder. Another possible cause for insomnia involves certain medications. These may include congestive heart failure and other cardiovascular disorder, neurological problems, mental disorders, sleep apnea, gastro-esophageal reflux disease, hyperthyroidism, arthritis, fibromyalgia, urinary problems, Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

Diagnosing accurately insomnia is vital since the experts need to identify whether there are other possible serious health problems causing this condition. This will also help them know the appropriate treatment and management needed. Successfully treating insomnia includes the combination of pharmacological treatments and non-medical or behavioral treatments, although the treatment for insomnia may also involve only one kind of management. Most people can benefit from improving one’s sleeping habits by maintaining a regular sleeping schedule, avoiding too much caffeine and alcohol intake before bedtime, not forcing yourself to sleep, and adjusting the bedroom environment to be more conducive to sleeping. It is also helpful if the person will avoid going to sleep hungry and also when very full.

Over the years, experts have used relaxation techniques as a natural insomnia treatment. Before going to sleep, a person is recommended to meditate for at least 30 minutes. Anxieties and other problems will be most likely forgotten when a person spends some time relaxing prior to going to bed.  Experts also suggest to do exercise regularly but not for 3 to 4 hours before bedtime. It is also recommended for a person to sleep when already feeling sleepy.  Some research studies suggest that people should sleep no later than 10 in the evening. Other effective methods involve the use of certain oils for massaging, drinking plenty of glasses of water, and limiting foods that are rich in sugary content. These natural remedies for insomnia have been proven to be effective especially if applied in combination with certain pharmacological treatments.

Natural ADHD Treatment

The most diagnosed behavioral disorder among school age children is attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or ADHD. It is often seen in males compared to females. Until now, researchers continue to conduct studies in the attempt to identify its actual cause since knowing its exact etiology will allow experts to know what will really cure this health condition. Children diagnosed with this condition experience difficulties and problems in socializing with other people, including their own family members and friends. With this condition, early diagnosis is important so that signs and symptoms will be appropriately managed.

Children with ADHD exhibit symptoms like overactivity, increased irritability, restlessness, and age-inappropriate inattention. Disruptive behaviors are common to ADHD children. Therefore, it is vital to manage these symptoms. The treatment of choice for diagnosed cases of ADHD in children involves the use of stimulant medications. However, the use of these drugs can result to disturbing and serious adverse effects that make the children and their parents worried. The adverse effects which are usually reported include sleeping problems, anorexia, weight loss, hypersensitivity, palpitations, and anemia. Because of this, researchers have identified several ways to treat and manage the condition in a natural way.

Studies suggest that the use of medications for ADHD can work best when teamed with various natural ADHD treatments that have been proven effective by experts. Diet is known to trigger the occurrence and worsening of ADHD symptoms. It is recommended for ADHD children to consume foods that contain significant amounts of essential fatty acids. Their diet must also be packed with vitamins and minerals like vitamin B6, vitamin B1, magnesium, iron, zinc and niacin. Children diagnosed with ADHD can also benefit from elimination diet. This means that diagnosed children should avoid certain foods that contain high amounts of refined sugar, preservatives, and food enhancers.

Many herbal products and plant extracts can also help in managing the symptoms of ADHD. A plant which has been proven to be effective in relieving ADHD symptoms like restlessness and hyperactivity is hyoscyamus. The extracts of this herb is known to be of great help in reducing fidgeting, tantrums, overactivity and other disruptive behaviors. For ADHD children who lack the ability to focus and concentrate on a particular task, a plant known as tuberculinum can be beneficial. It can also provide relief for children who are constantly irritable and upset.

Another herb, which is an ADHD cure, is arsen iod. The extract from this plant can help improve the balance of a child with ADHD. This herb is also found to be effective in reducing annoyance and frustration when an ADHD child has trouble in finishing certain task. Verta alb is a plant known to have a soothing effect on the nerves of hyperactive children. Other herbs that are used as alternative treatments for ADHD are ginkgo biloba, scuttelaria, avena sativa, lemon balm, green oats and ginseng. However, parents should consult their child’s physician first before deciding to use any of these herbal remedies for ADHD.

Home Remedies for Gout

Arthritis is a cluster of diseases affecting discs and bones in the human body which may oftentimes lead to disability if left untreated. Common forms of arthritis include rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia and gout. Gout accounts for about five percent of all cases of arthritis. This condition is more common in individuals who are in their 40’s and 50’s. It is found to be nine times more common in males than in females. Gout attacks are the result of deposits and build up of crystals which formed as a result of abnormally high levels of uric acid circulating in the blood. The accumulation of these sodium urate crystals is not the reason for the occurrence of the signs and symptoms of gout. Gout attacks produce pain as a result of the irritation of these crystals when these accumulate around joint areas.

Diagnosing this condition can be achieved by a thorough assessment of signs and symptoms and medical history. Blood tests are also beneficial when identifying the uric acid levels in the blood which is the underlying cause of this condition. The increase in uric acid levels in the blood are usually the result of the body’s fault in terms of metabolizing these waste materials or the body’s excessive production of uric acid. There are also certain health conditions which may increase uric acid levels in the body. Examples of these include diabetes mellitus and malignancy such as in cancer.

Gout attacks are usually characterized by local pain and stiffness. The affected area may appear swollen and reddish as a result of an inflammatory process. The pain is often described as gnawing and worse when waking up early in the morning, during and after every activity. The pain and discomfort brought about by this condition may vary from mild to very severe that even the mere contact of a blanket to the affected area produces excruciating pain. It is necessary for the individual experiencing this condition to manage gout attacks to prevent this condition from occurring again. Studies show that people with gout will more likely experience the attack from time to time especially if symptoms are left unmanaged.

There are several home remedies which can be done during gout attacks. When the first sign of pain and discomfort is noticed, it is necessary for the person to immediately stop the activity which is believed to trigger the gout attack. Immobilizing the affected area through the use of splints or straps is also necessary to keep the area from moving, thus making room for healing process to take place. Applying an ice pack or cold compress directly over the area reduces the inflammation. Once the swelling has subsided, it is necessary to perform physical activities in order to keep the affected joints mobile. Range-of-motion exercises are recommended to allow movement of the affected areas. Warm up and cooling down exercises is also beneficial in preventing recurrence of gout attacks.

Since gout causes include diet and having a sedentary lifestyle, people with this condition can greatly benefit from modifying their lifestyle. With this, the individual is recommended to have a healthy balanced diet packed with essential nutrients, as well as vitamins and minerals. Since gout attacks occur due to high levels of uric acid in the blood, it is necessary to avoid foods that contain excessive amounts of uric acid such as seafood, organ meats and certain vegetables like legumes and spinach. Rehydration is also the key to prevent the recurrence of gout attacks. Experts suggest to consume at least eight six-ounce of fluid preferably water, daily. With these strategies, having another gout attack can be prevented.

Drugs Used to Treat ADHD

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is the most common behavioral disorder among school age children. It is most common in males than in females. A smaller population of adults is also diagnosed with this condition. Children with this behavioral disorder are known to manifest overactivity, increased irritability, age-inappropriate inattention and inability to focus and concentrate on most activities. Early diagnosis is important in order to prevent the signs and symptoms of children with this condition from worsening. Diagnosing ADHD is done by an expert clinician through the use of a diagnostic tool known as DSM-IV diagnostic criteria.

There is no known exact cure for ADHD since studies have not yet been able to identify the actual etiology of this disorder. The goal of treatment and management for this disorder is to relieve and minimize the ADHD signs and symptoms. If children with ADHD do not receive immediate management for their signs and symptoms, their condition may worsen and greatly affect their home and school performance, as well as their relationship with other family members and their peers. The most common treatment used for children with ADHD is through the use of stimulant medications.

Ritalin is the drug of choice for ADHD. It is classified as a methylphenidate with other brands known as Concerta, Metadate and Methylin. It has been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of ADHD. This drug immediately and effectively reduces the signs and symptoms of ADHD in children under the age of 18 years. It allows people with this condition to have a life which is as close to normal as possible. Among the many disadvantages that come with the use of Ritalin include nervousness, insomnia, dizziness, palpitations, anorexia and nausea. In rare cases, this drug can also cause drug dependence.

Another drug which is commonly used as treatment for ADHD is amphetamine and dextroamphetamine. Adderall is the most popular drug under this classification. It is also known as a treatment for narcolepsy. Studies have shown that Adderall significantly reduces ADHD symptoms. The beneficial effects of this drug usually last for several hours depending on the dosage. However, this drug also posses several serious side effects such as body malaise or weakness, delayed growth and development, extreme weight loss, increased heart rate, and cardiac arrhythmia.

Some medications used as treatment for ADHD take longer time for its effects to be noticed such as Adderall. Other longer acting stimulants include Vyvanse, Daytrana, and Focalin XR. These medications last for 8 to 12 hours and therefore can be taken once daily. This ADHD medication for children is usually beneficial for those who experience difficulty in taking medications at school. There are certain studies that show the effectiveness of shorter acting stimulant medications for managing signs and symptoms of ADHD. Examples of these drugs are Ritalin SR, Methylin Chewable Tablet and Oral Solution, Dexedrine, Dextrostat, Metadate ER, and Methylin ER.

Other known medications used to manage signs and symptoms of ADHD are Intuniv, Strattera, Provigil or Modafanil, Wellbutrin, TCA or tricyclic antidepressants, and Risperdal. There are a wide variety of medications which can be used for children with ADHD. However, it is best for parents to consult experts with regards to the treatment and management of their children’s conditions. Medications coupled with exercise, adequate rest and sleep, as well as healthy balanced diet are best ways to help relieve the signs and symptoms of this condition.

What You Should Know About Dental Implants

It is estimated that approximately more than 200 million Americans have incomplete set of teeth while 1 out of 10 adult American has no teeth at all. Others may not see it as a problem. However, an incomplete set of teeth or having no teeth can also cause some problems. Among these problems are discomforts especially when chewing foods, weakening of the bite, and these may also cause harm to other neighboring teeth. Fortunately, experts were able to discover and find a solution for problems such as those mentioned. One of the more popular ways to solve this problem is through the use of dental implants.

Experts created artificial teeth which are placed and anchored the mandibular bone. These artificial teeth are known as dental implants. Dental implants are becoming more popular worldwide. In the United States alone, more than half million dental implants are estimated to be performed in the country annually. Majority of the population are satisfied with regards to the outcome of their dental implants. But unfortunately, not everyone can afford to have and use these implants. Aside from the fact that it is expensive, implants also have certain risks. It is advisable to make use of implants if only there are a few lacking teeth because replacing the entire set of teeth with dental implants costs thousands of dollars and several longer sessions with the dentists.

Titanium is the main component of a dental implant. It is a metal which weighs less and comes with high quality and durability. This metal has lesser chances to be rejected by the body. It has also been found that titanium fuses well with bone tissues. Dental implants made of titanium are formed as metal screws which will then be anchored and implanted deep into the mandibular bone or simply, the jawbone. It functions to hold the false tooth or the complete set of teeth in place. It was in 1965 that this procedure was first performed but it was only in 1986 that the American Dental Association (ADA) approved it to be widely practiced.

When deciding to have dental implants, it is important to discuss thoroughly all the concerns with the dentist especially when it comes to the benefits, risks and probable outcome of this procedure. People who are often advised and approved to have dental implants are those healthy individuals who only intend to replace few missing teeth. Dentists also consider if the person have enough bone since it is where the implants will be anchored. Several contraindications with regards to dental implants include use of medications such as corticosteroids, diabetes mellitus, anemia and other health problems that may comprise the healing process following the procedure. Smokers and chronic alcohol drinkers are also not advised to have dental implants.

Dental implants cost more compared to other older selections such as dentures and bridges. These choices can be finished in a matter of weeks unlike dental implants which usually takes several months for it to complete. However, if it is desired to only fill minimal gaps without involving neighboring teeth, dental implant is the perfect solution. Everything must be considered and planned well before deciding to have implants. Dental implant cost, the nature of the procedure, advantages and risks must altogether be evaluated and discussed thoroughly with an expert since there are also chances that the procedure will fail.

What You Should Know About Breast Augmentation

Recently, more and more women choose to undergo surgery in order to reconstruct and enhance their appearance. The most popular cosmetic surgery procedure involves increasing and enhancing the size of the breasts of a woman. In 1997, approximately 101,000 cases of breast augmentation are performed. However, in the present year, this number of cases more than tripled. Breast augmentation, which is also known as augmentation mammaplasty, involves the use of implants to fulfill the desire to have fuller breasts. Breast augmentation may also be used for reconstructive purposes especially for women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent modified radical mastectomy (MRM) which involves the removal of the entire breast to prevent the spread of malignancy.

Breast augmentation involves the use of silicone or saline breast implants. These implants can either be placed behind the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle to add size, shape, and fullness to the breast. It can also help in balancing breasts that are asymmetrical and restore its fullness which has been diminished as a result of aging, pregnancy, as well as accidents and other health conditions which often lead to wasting and tissue atrophy. The process of breast augmentation may take several weeks from the first consultation to the post-operative period. This process requires thorough and constant communication between the surgeon and the client.

Before making decisions with regards to having breast augmentation, it is very important for the client to gain understanding and knowledge with regards to the procedure, its risks, benefits and probable results. Usually for about a few weeks, the client will be able to fully recover. However, it is important to keep in mind that the actual time it will take for the client to fully recover from the procedure depends primarily on the client’s present health status and condition, as well as with the degree of the enlargement, and several other factors.

There are also some serious risks associated with breast augmentation. Examples of more common risks of this surgical procedure include contractures, sepsis and ruptured breast implants. Implants are expected to break and rupture eventually although how many years it will take for the implants to break has not yet been clearly identified. In some cases, breast implants may take 7 to 12 years or even more than 15 years, without being ruptured while in other cases, even after a few months following the surgery, the implants are already ruptured.

Some people argue that breast implants can cause diseases and other illnesses such as autoimmune diseases, malignancy, and even death. But there have been no strong evidences that prove to these claims. Breast augmentation may considered be a problem especially to lactating or breastfeeding mothers. Studies show that in most cases of breast implants, there is a reduced and inadequate milk production to meet the needs of the newborn. Other studies also found out that the milk produced by a woman who has undergone this surgical procedure contains significant amount of toxins compared to a breastfeeding woman who has no breast implants.

It is important for women who are thinking of having breast augmentation to consult first with an expert. This will allow them to gain insight with regards to both the benefits and disadvantages of breast augmentation. These women must evaluate thoroughly whether the benefits of this procedure outweigh the risks brought about by this kind of surgery.

Vitamins for ADHD

ADHD is a chronic syndrome of age-inappropriate inattention, distractibility, restlessness, overactivity and impulsivity. Over the years, researchers are continuously conducting studies in order to find out the cure for ADHD. It is difficult for them, as of now, because the exact cause of this neurological disorder is still unknown. But recently, experts were able to point out several possible causes of ADHD. These findings led them to the development of new treatments and managements for this behavioral condition.

The best-documented and most widely used treatment for ADHD is through psychoactive medications, stimulants in particular. Among the most common examples of these are Ritalin, Concerta, Methyline, Adderall and Dexedrine. But these medications have serious side effects that concern the families of children diagnosed with this disorder. Some common serious side effects include weight loss, anorexia, changes in blood pressure, sedation, increased risk for seizures, and growth retardation. Because of these side effects, several other alternative treatments have been used. These include vitamin supplements.

Although what actually causes ADHD has not yet been identified, many experts associate this behavioral disorder with certain vitamins and minerals deficiencies. Essential fatty acids are found to be helpful in improving ADHD. Foods that contain high amount of EFA include salmon, fish oils, walnut, and flaxseeds should be part of the child’s diet. EFA is known to help in the brain development of the child, and to improve its functioning. It is also important for parents to identify whether their children have some food allergies. Other herbal remedies like Chinese herbs are also found to be helpful for children with ADHD.

Iron supplements are recommended for children, especially those diagnosed with ADHD since many studies support that this condition is somehow related with low levels of some components of the red blood cells. Iron must be taken with vitamin C in order to increase its absorption. But parents must remember that excessive dosage of these vitamins and minerals are toxic and harmful for their children. There are various studies suggesting that zinc deficiency may cause hyperactivity. Although this mineral has nothing to do with inattention, it is recommended for children with ADHD to take zinc supplements. This will reduce signs and symptoms of overactivity in these children.

Another vitamin which is essential for brain development is the vitamin B6. This vitamin which is also referred to as pyridoxine, has proven to be as effective as Ritalin in treating symptoms of ADHD and with lesser side effects compared to this stimulant drug. Vitamins for ADD must be given together with a healthy and balanced diet. There are a lot of vitamins and minerals that are known to be helpful in managing ADHD. However, parents must first consult experts when considering giving their children vitamin supplements for their condition.

Osteoporosis Prevention and Treatment

An estimated number of 75 million people across the globe, particularly in the United States, Europe and Japan, are diagnosed with osteoporosis. It is a condition more commonly experienced by women who are above 50 years old. Studies show that about 1 out of 3 women over 50 years of age experience fractures associated with osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a condition which is characterized by a reduced density of the bone leading to a decrease in its strength. This will then lead to fragile bones, making it prone to frequent injuries and fractures.

Osteoporosis leads to extremely porous bones. This condition happens when bone tissues lose significant amount of protein and other mineral content, particularly calcium. This bone disorder predisposes a person to injuries such as fractures which often heal slowly and poorly. Several factors increase the risk of developing osteoporosis. Some of these include age, gender, race, figure type, lifestyle and diet. This condition is more likely to occur on older people, postmenopausal women, Caucasian and Asian women. There are also some research studies which have identified family history as a factor for the development of osteoporosis.

Lifestyle modification is the effective way to prevent the development of osteoporosis. Cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption have been identified as factors which may contribute to the development of this condition. Therefore, it is necessary to avoid smoking and excessive alcohol drinking. Caffeinated beverages must be avoided as well. It is recommended to reduce the intake of high dietary protein as this may increase excretion of calcium from the body which will then lead to increased risk for developing osteoporosis.

Diagnosing osteoporosis can be performed through radiography, dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA or DEXA). It can also be diagnosed through quantitative CT and ultrasound. Screening tests with the use of bone densitometry are recommended especially to women above 65 years old. Osteoporosis treatment involves the use of several drug classifications such as antiresorptive agents and bone anabolic agents. The drug of choice for women suffering with this condition is biphosphonate drugs which fall under the category of antiresorptive agents. In some cases, osteoporosis can cause serious fractures and in these cases, surgery may be indicated.

It is recommended for people diagnosed with osteoporosis to improve their nutrition by consuming foods rich in vitamins and minerals that promote muscle strength. Food supplements containing calcium and vitamin D are essential. Calcium is important for bone growth and healing while vitamin D enhances the absorption of calcium from the blood into the bone. Several studies also show the importance of physical activities such as resistance, stretching and weight bearing exercises in maintaining and increasing bone density. Excellent examples of these exercises include aerobics, dancing, climbing the stairs, jogging, tennis and weight lifting. It is helpful to be exercising is at least 20 to 30 minutes three to four times per week to prevent osteoporosis.

Natural Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, as well as systematic disorder characterized by inflammation of the lining of the joints or the synovial membrane. This condition is not an inevitable aspect of the aging process. It may also lead to lifelong damage to the tissues, resulting to loss of function and disability. Common symptoms include pain, stiffness, red discoloration, warmth and burning sensation over the affected area. Since this condition is a systemic disease, it may affect other organs in the body. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are important in order to prevent this condition from worsening which can lead to permanent disability. These will also limit the chances of loss of movement and function, expensive medical expenses, and possible surgery.

While there is no cure for this condition, there are several ways to control and alleviate its symptoms and modifying the disease process. The goal of treatment and management for rheumatoid arthritis is to relieve the current symptoms at the same time, preventing future damage of the joints. Certain anti-inflammatory medications can also be used such as glucocorticoids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs. Over-the-counter pain medications can also be used such as paracetamol. Other prescribed drugs which can be effective in managing rheumatoid arthritis include opiates, diproqualone and lidocaine.

Natural remedies for rheumatoid arthritis are becoming more popular but must not be used as a substitute for conventional care. Lifestyle modification is one of the most effective way of managing not only arthritis, but also most other diseases known. It is important to maintain a healthy weight. Unhealthy habits such as smoking and drinking alcohol must be avoided. Being overweight puts more stress on the joints. Losing weight can help improve joint function. According to experts, people who lose weight can slow the progress of rheumatoid arthritis. There are also essential substances that must be part of the diet. These include essential fatty acids, omega-3 fatty acids in particular, and gamma-linolenic acid.

Herbal medicines are also helpful in managing rheumatoid arthritis. Boswellia is an herb native in India which is known to have significant effect in reducing the inflammatory process. It is also useful for other inflammatory conditions. This herbal medicine is also available in pill form. Another herbal plant which can be used as rheumatoid arthritis treatment is the Devil’s claw. It is a plant commonly found in southern Africa. It has been used for several years for rheumatoid arthritis, as well as other diseases like skin problems, and gastrointestinal disorders. White willow is also another herbal medicine proven to be useful for rheumatoid arthritis.

Other popular alternative treatments for rheumatoid arthritis include adrenal extract, beta carotene, copper, ginger, magnesium, pantothenic acid, selenium and probiotics. The diet must also contain essential vitamins and minerals including vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin E and zinc. In most cases, physical therapy can also be beneficial. Exercises are strongly recommended since it will keep the joints moving and improve the circulation which will enhance tissue healing and repair. These strategies are effective when coupled with the prescribed medicines and treatment by the physician. Therefore, it is important to seek medical help immediately and not only rely on home remedies in managing rheumatoid arthritis.

Natural ADHD Treatment

ADHD affects 5 to 9 percent of the school-age children. It is important for parents, family members, teachers and other caregivers to understand the condition in order for them to make the right decisions for their children. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is a chronic neurodevelopment disorder that interferes with the capability of a child to regulate and control behavior, as well as to sustain attention to tasks in developmentally appropriate ways. Children diagnosed with this condition have difficult controlling impulses. It commonly affects males than females. However, in adults, ADHD is seen equally on both genders.

Over the years, researchers continue to study in the attempt of identifying the actual etiology of ADHD. Until now, no one knows its exact cause. However, there are several risk factors which have been identified by experts. These factors are seen to contribute to its diagnosis. ADHD has been associated with family history, certain environmental factors and chemicals, head injuries especially during early years in life, and food substances like preservatives and sweeteners. Based on these findings, experts have identified several helpful ways to treat ADHD in a natural way.

Special diets like elimination diet are found to be of great help in minimizing symptoms of ADHD in children. The diet of these children must contain significant amount of essential fatty acids which can be found in fish products. It is recommended for parents to eliminate certain foods that may cause the child to be hyperactive such as foods containing large quantities of sugar and caffeine. Common food allergens must be avoided as well. These include chicken, eggs, and seafood. It may also be necessary to offer the child foods that do not contain food enhancers and other artificial flavorings.

There are certain studies that point out the relationship between particular vitamin and mineral deficiencies with ADHD. Examples of these include vitamin D and magnesium. ADHD natural treatment may also include some herbal supplements such as traditional Chinese medicines can also be helpful for children with ADHD. Other therapies are found to greatly contribute to minimizing the signs and symptoms of this behavioral condition. Yoga is also considered to be of great help in alleviating symptoms of ADHD and in helping the child develop self-control and providing the child a sense of calmness.

Arthritis is a chronic debilitating and degenerative disorder that targets the joint causing severe pain that may lead to lifelong disability especially when left untreated. Arthritis is commonly experienced by those who are above 40 years of age. As a result of aging, joints and other connective tissues are no longer as strong, elastic and flexible as before. However, it must be kept in mind that this disorder is not limited to the older people alone, it can occur in different ages but it is seldom seen in young children. Although arthritis cannot result to death, it is still considered a serious problem since it may significantly affect all aspects in a person’s life.

This condition can be treated and managed by the use of several strategies that can improve the strength of the affected area and delay the progress of the disease process. There are several forms of arthritis, each having its on host of causes. Among its many common afflictions include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, septic arthritis and gout. This condition is usually manifested with signs and symptoms of pain, stiffness, swelling, redness, as well as warm and burning sensation over the joints. Oftentimes, these symptoms may also be accompanied with fever and chills.

The most effective way to manage arthritis is through regular exercise which is only possible after the inflammation and swelling has subsided. It is also important to keep the joints mobile by performing range-of-motion exercises, as well as isometrics, strengthening and stretching exercises. Warming up and cooling down exercises must also be performed before and after each activity. Having adequate rest and sleep are also important to allow time for the damaged areas to heal. It is necessary to immobilize the joints but it must not be used with bandages and other straps as these will impair the circulation of blood to the affected joints.

Several natural arthritis remedies have been proven to be effective in managing and treating the symptoms of this condition. Raw juices are found to be beneficial for people suffering from this condition. Examples of these include fresh pineapple juice, potato juice, and vegetable extracts combined with carrot, celery, and red beet juices. It is important to seek medical help to identify the degree and progress of the condition with regards to the use of these natural arthritis remedies.

Gout Remedies

Gout is among the most widely known afflictions of arthritis and rheumatic disease, together with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus. In this condition, needle-shaped uric acid crystals accumulate and build up in the joints, due to a fault in the body’s ability to metabolize, or process, purines. Purines are chemicals that can be found naturally in certain foods, such as organ meats like liver and kidney, and anchovies. Gout primarily affects men over 35 years of age who live sedentary lifestyle and are overweight.

The classic symptoms of gout include pain in the affected joint, swelling, tenderness, burning and warm sensation over the area. The pain associated with an acute gout attack involves feeling of pressure and tightening over the area, and gnawing pain. Sometimes these symptoms are accompanied by fever and chills. Common areas that are usually affected are the big toe, joints on the hands and feet, as well as the knees, shoulders, and elbows. Gout usually appears suddenly, produces severe pain, and would lasts for several days or weeks if left untreated.

It is important to seek medical help immediately after suspecting the presence of this condition. The physician may prescribe medications to help alleviate the pain and discomfort. However, there are also several gout remedies which can be done at home to manage gout attacks. It is necessary to avoid putting any weight on the joint. This can be achieved by not applying any pressure on the joint as this will increase the pain and possible damage the area further. Gout is a serious condition because it can sometimes lead to a lot of major joint damage and destruction.

To help reduce pain and swelling, it is vital to elevate the affected area. This will keep the blood from rushing directly to the area which can cause additional inflammation. Immobilizing the joint should also be done during an acute gout attack. This can be best achieved by applying splints and straps around the area to prevent it from moving. Over-the-counter pain medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can help reduce the inflammatory process leading to pain relief and less swelling on the affected area.

Preventing attacks of gout is important especially for those who are prone to experiencing this condition such as those who are above 35 years old, overweight, smokes heavily, consume large amount of alcohol, have high uric acid levels in their circulation, and have relatives who are also suffering from gout attacks. Several ways to prevent an acute attack include maintaining desirable weight, not eating any foods that are rich in purines such as organ meats, smoking cessation, abstaining from alcohol beverages, drinking at least eight glasses of water a day, wearing comfortable footwear and having a healthy balanced diet.

Arthritis Home Remedies

Arthritis affects approximately 50 million adult Americans in the present day. It is a group of conditions involving damage to the joints of the body. According to the Arthritis Foundation of Atlanta, there are more than 100 forms different forms of arthritis with different causes. Among the more common afflictions of arthritis include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout. The pain from arthritis is the result of an inflammatory process that occurs around the joint area due to tissue damage and muscle strains. This condition has no known cures. However, there are steps which can help ease discomfort and allow the return to normal activities.

While there is no treatment for arthritis, one can adopt a variety of coping techniques that will decrease stiffness and discomfort associated with this condition. The first important thing to consider is to maintaining the normal functioning of the joints. Arthritis is a debilitating condition if left unmanaged. It can make the affected person unable to perform activities of daily living and return to previous job. In this condition, it is important to maintain the movement of the joints as much as possible. This can help keep the joints from functioning better. Doing household chores and gardening are good examples of activities that can keep the joints moving.

Exercises are effective in improving this condition. But these activities should only be down after the inflammation has stopped. There are a few different types of exercises that are used to help people suffering from arthritis. The easiest exercise that can be done by almost anyone who is experiencing this painful condition is the range-of-motion exercises. This form of exercise helps maintain good movement placing the affected joint through its full range of motion. Isometrics and stretching exercises are also effective ways to exercise the joints. It is important to perform warm up, as well as cooling down exercises, before and after each activities in order to avoid injuries to the joints.

Other effective home remedies for arthritis also include natural substances that can help provide relief from the pain and discomfort brought about by this condition. Avocado and soybean extracts are known effective remedies for arthritis as these can improve the stiffness especially if the knees and hips are the joints affected. These are also known to decrease the swelling and tissue healing. However, its safe use on children, pregnant and nursing mothers have not yet been studied and proven. Other substances that can be used as arthritis remedies include glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate. These substances help keep cartilages strong and elastic preventing further tissue damage.

Massage therapy, as well as acupuncture, are recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) to help relieve pain brought about by certain conditions including arthritis. Many believe that acupuncture functions by helping release natural substances from the body that aid in providing pain relief. Examples of these substances produced by the body are catecholamines like endorphins and serotonin. Relaxation and meditation exercises can also help provide relief from arthritis.

ADHD Medications and You

Stimulants are the most widely used treatment for ADHD. These psychoactive medicines are the best-documented and most rapidly effective treatments for most patients with ADHD. Stimulant medications can also be used together with certain behavioral treatments which also have well-documented effectiveness for most diagnosed patients. Although these medications are proven to be effective, its effect varies depending on each client.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics Guideline, it is important to note the well-documented superiority of stimulants for most children and adolescents diagnosed with ADHD. Stimulants are not only more effective for those with this condition but also safer than most other drugs. An exception, however, is pemoline or Cylert which in rare cases can cause liver necrosis and can result to the need for liver transplant or even death.

The two best-documented stimulants are methylphenidate and amphetamine.  Common examples of methylphenidate are Ritalin, Concerta, Methylin, Metadate and Focalin. For amphetamine, examples include Adderall and Dexedrine. The most important point about stimulants is that if the first one fails, the child still has a good chance of responding well to another drug under the same class. Studies show that about two thirds of children diagnosed with ADHD respond satisfactorily to either methylphenidate or amphetamine.

When taking these medications, it is important for the physician to emphasize to the parents the significance of carefully monitoring the side effects of these medications. The advantages of stimulant medication for ADHD includes specifically treating ADHD core symptoms of inattention, overactivity and impulsivity, medically safer than most psychoactive drugs and its results can be seen immediately. In 90 percent of ADHD cases, stimulants are seen to be effective especially if two or more of these drugs are tried in succession.

However, just like any other medications, these stimulants also have a number of side effects and disadvantages. Mild side effects may include muscle cramps, headaches, tics, sleep disturbances, and dizziness. More serious problems that may come along when taking these medications are loss of appetite, anorexia, increased heart rate, changes in blood pressure, depression, hallucinations, and delayed growth and development.

Buspirone, antihistamine, neuroleptics, and anticonvulsants are other ADHD drug classes that have been found somehow useful. However, these drugs are seldom prescribed to children with ADHD because of the many serious side effects and risks that it may cause such as hypotensive dizziness, risk of seizures, liver toxicity, endocrine effects, and sudden deaths.

It is important for families of children with ADHD to consult experts with regards to the condition of their children. Physician will evaluate the need for using these medications for their children. Parents must ask the physician to discuss with them all the possible benefits and risks of taking these medications so that they will be able to make well-informed decisions with regards to the treatment and management for their children.

The Gout/Food Connection

Among 37 million of the population are known to have experienced some form of arthritis or rheumatic disease, especially the elderly. Gout is only one among the many afflictions of arthritis, together with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. In the case of gout, uric acid crystals accumulate in the joints. This is brought about by the body’s inability to metabolize and process purines. This condition is common to men who are above 35 years of age, consume large amount of alcohol, overweight, and live a sedentary lifestyle. The American Medical Association identified common foods which are rich in purines. These foods include anchovies, sardines in oil, fish roes, herring, yeast, legumes, meat extracts and some vegetables including mushrooms, spinach, asparagus, and cauliflower. Organ meats such as liver, kidneys and sweetbreads are very rich in purines as well.

The most common signs and symptoms of gout are pain in the base of the joint more commonly on the feet, hand, knees, shoulders and elbows. Oftentimes, gout attacks may be accompanied with fevers and chills as a result of inflammatory processes. The discomfort is described as a gnawing pain accompanied by feeling of pressure and tightness on the affected area. Diagnosing this condition is through a series of blood tests and synovial fluid examinations. Gout attacks occur very suddenly, producing severe pain and usually last three to five days if left untreated. Recurrent attacks are common and tend to last longer than three to five days.

Several conditions can result in acute attacks of gout. However, experts have identified that it is most likely due to abnormally high levels of uric acid circulating in the blood. It may be due to overproduction or the body’s fault to metabolize and properly excrete these waste products. Cell activities produce these waste products which are known as uric acids. Crystals are formed when there is an increase in uric acid in the blood. Signs and symptoms of gout appear when these crystals deposit and accumulate in the joints. Hypertension is also attributed with gout attacks. Other more serious health conditions that may cause uric acid levels to increase include cancer, lymphoma, psoriasis, and anemia.

Since diet has been strongly associated with gout attacks, it is important to avoid these gout foods which can trigger attacks. Foods which are rich in purines must be reduced or completely eliminated from the diet. Examples of purine rich foods include meat, poultry and vegetables such as cauliflower, asparagus, peas and spinach. Legumes such as lima beans, navy beans and lentils also contain high amounts of purines. Seafood and fish are rich in purines, as well as crabs, cod, lobsters, snapper, salmon, tuna and trout. Oatmeal also contain significant amount of purine and therefore must be avoided. Beer, wine and ale can precipitate attacks of gout. Alcohol causes urate retention. Effective ways to prevent gout attacks include maintaining a desirable weight and avoiding alcohol, accompanied with physical exercises.
