What are the Signs and Symptoms of Lupus

Lupus erythematosus is a category of an autoimmune disease affecting mainly the different systems in the body and targeting vital body organs such as the kidneys, heart and lungs. Other organs affected include the joints, skin and blood cells. Approximately 1.5 million Americans are suffering from lupus. Studies show that 90 percent of cases diagnosed with this disease are females. The four main types of lupus are systemic lupus erythematosus, discoid lupus erythematosus, drug-induced lupus erythematosus and neonatal lupus erythematosus. Among these, systemic lupus erythematosus or SLE is the most common form of lupus. It is also considered to be the most serious form of lupus erythematosus.

Diagnosing this disorder is done through a number of diagnostic examinations since there is no single test that can diagnose lupus. Symptoms of lupus usually vary from person to person. Some people suffering from this condition manifest serious signs and symptoms while others only have mild symptoms. Among the most common symptoms of this health condition are joint pain or swelling, muscle pain, idiopathic hyperthermia, body weakness, and red rashes on the face or known as butterfly or malar rash. These rashes appear across the nose and cheeks, and may also sometimes appear on the ears, upper extremities, shoulders, chest and hands. Photosensitivity or hypersensitivity to light is common to people suffering from lupus. Skin rashes usually appear and worsen after prolonged exposure to sunlight.

Lupus is also characterized by shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing especially during deep inspirations. There may also be unusual hair thinning or hair loss, bipedal and periorbital edema or swelling, mouth ulcers, swollen glands and lymph nodes, body malaise or extreme body weakness. Reynaud’s phenomenon is another sign of lupus. Bluish or purplish discoloration of the fingers, toes, and other areas of the body characterize this phenomenon. With this condition, people may also experience migraine attacks, episodes of depression, dizziness and confusion. They also have higher risks for seizures. Lupus signs and symptoms may come and go and worsen over time. Different symptoms may appear after the initial diagnosis.

In some people diagnosed with lupus, only one system may be affected such as the skin or joints. Lupus may have systemic effects. People suffering from this health condition may eventually develop nephritis, pleuritis, vasculitis, anemia, thrombocytopenia, myocarditis or endocarditis, and atherosclerosis. The treatment for lupus erythematosus depends on the individual needs and may change over time. Managing the disease relies on the client and the physician.  Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin are commonly used for people with lupus. Since there is no known exact cure for lupus, the goal of treatment and management for this disorder is basically to minimize organ damage and prevent complications.

Wedding Centerpiece Ideas

Because wedding events are often considered to be the most significant event in a person’s lifetime, it is important to make it more special and more memorable. This can be achieved by meticulously planning and preparing well for the occasion. Aside from the bridal gown and other wedding attire, wedding theme, wedding cake, and floral decorations, it is also important to appropriately choose the right centerpiece during the wedding reception. The wedding centerpiece is among the few things that wedding guests will remember during your wedding day.

Most brides prefer a floral centerpiece. This creates a more natural yet special and elegant look. Anemones are the most popular flower used as floral decorations for the centerpiece during the wedding reception. Anemones do not have a scent compared to other flowers and they come in a variety of beautiful shades. The most popular kind of these flowers used by brides are those which come in white and have a black shade on the center portion of the flower. These flowers create a modernized and elegant look. Others may also choose to have gerbera daisies that are cream in color with dark centers.

Another wedding centerpiece idea is to combine various designs and styles. Gaining more popularity is to design wedding centerpiece by mixing it up. Instead of using the same color, height and design of flowers, couples may choose to make it more unique by arranging the centerpieces with flowers of different shades, height and kind. This creates a more sophisticated look. Wedding guests are more likely to appreciate this unique wedding centerpiece. However, this may be more expensive compared to plain floral centerpieces.

Over the years, wedding centerpiece has been filled with roses and other traditional flowers like
Phalaenopsis orchids. But recently more and more brides prefer the use of Mokara orchids. These flowers come in shades of pink and orange. Mokara orchids have been popular nowadays since it has a full bloom of flowers all over its stalk. Another reason which makes it more famous is the fact that fewer flowers are needed to create an elegant look, which allows the couple to save more from spending for a wedding centerpiece.

Wedding reception centerpieces are more striking when used with brightly colored table linens and napkins. It is usually thought that flowers which have brighter shades can stand alone with white backgrounds. However, pairing these brightly colored floral arrangements with other centerpiece ideas that also come in bright shades can create a bolder, more elegant and more sophisticated look. This wedding centerpiece will more likely catch the attention of the wedding guests. Other wedding centerpiece ideas involve the use of standout vases, candles, lamps, and through the use of arrangements that come in natural shapes.

Themed Weddings

Wedding ceremony are special events in one’s life, which may only happen once. Therefore making it more special and memorable is important. Every detail must be carefully planned. One of the most important parts of wedding planning and preparation is the selection of the wedding theme and motif. This a unique way for the couple to make their wedding more unique and creative. The bride and the groom should plan together with regards to the wedding theme they want to have. They should agree on one theme, and this theme must be something which will somehow show a bit of their creative personality.

One of the more unique way to plan for a themed wedding is to plan it according to the season in which the wedding event will take place. Planning for a spring wedding involves the use of many beautiful flowers like tulips. Wedding ceremonies that are planned to take place during the spring can be held at the garden for wedding guests to witness the beauty of blooming flowers. Indoor weddings are also ideal especially if the venue has a number of large windows that will let the light shine in, and provide a view of the flowers outside. The same concept applies with summer themed weddings. Bridal gowns and other wedding attires can be paired with accessories with vibrant colors to add effect and emphasize the season.

Wedding events that will take place during fall should involve colors that are usually associated with this condition such as shades of brown, rust, dark red, and dark orange. Bridal accessories and other wedding accessories can be accessorized with these colors. Locations for these wedding events can be outdoor for people to enjoy the view of nature, especially with trees having leaves that are falling from it. Indoor wedding ceremonies are also recommended but the venue must provide a view from the outside so that the beauty of nature outside can will add up to the beauty of the atmosphere of the entire wedding ceremony.

Winter wedding events are perfect for brides who desire to have more like a winter wonderland wedding. Wedding ceremonies that are filled with elegance and grandeur are ideal during this season. The usual location of wedding events during this season are taken place on grand places like a huge hotel ballroom which provides a complete view of the winter scene outside. Flowers recommended for winter weddings include those which are seasonal blooms like poinsettia, camellias and roses. Another good suggestion for the bride is to have a tea lights, candles or bells, instead of having a bouquet of flowers.

Other wedding ceremony ideas include wedding themes that are formal, casual, natural and romantic. Examples of more unique wedding themes are weddings for the country club, Hollywood-inspired, sophistically artistic wedding themes, Christmas wedding, a wedding for a sports fanatic, Victorian, Country and Medieval wedding. It  solely depends on the couple with regards to the wedding theme that they desire most. Those are just suggestions, many couples prefer to create their own theme for the very special day in their lives as husband and wife.

The Gout Diet

Arthritis is a category of diseases that mainly affect and cause damage to the joints of the body. There are more than 100 forms of arthritis. Among its most common types, include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. Gout accounts for approximately 5 percent of all cases of arthritis. In the United States, 50 million are known to suffer from this disease. Gout has always been associated with sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy diet, as well as with those who smoke and drink alcohol heavily. This painful condition is more common in individuals who are above 45 years of age. More men suffer from gout attacks compared to women. Family history has been associated with gout.

People who are diagnosed with this condition have a parent, siblings or other immediate family members who also suffer from gout attacks. However, diet has been the most common cause of gout. Diagnosing and managing this disease promptly is vital in order to prevent the condition from worsening, as this can possibly lead to immobility and disability. Gout occurs due to abnormally high levels of uric acid circulating in the blood. Therefore, managing this health condition is mainly directed in lowering the levels of uric acid. People suffering from this condition, can greatly benefit from gout diet. This kind of diet can help the people in preventing gout attacks and reducing its severity.

A gout diet typically decreases one’s intake of foods that are rich in purines. Purine-rich foods include animal products like liver, herring, anchovies, mackerel, red meat, and fatty fish. Shrimps, crabs, lobsters and other seafood must also be avoided since it contains rich amounts of purines. There are also certain vegetables, which should be avoided since these contain significant amounts of purines like cauliflowers and spinach. Other purine-rich foods include grouse, mutton, veal, bacon, turkey, partridge, trout, goose, haddock, and scallops.

Instead of getting protein from animal meat, people with gout can consume more plants that are adequate sources of protein. Examples of these are beans and legumes. People with gout are recommended to avoid a diet which high in protein, and fats. The ideal diet for individuals with gout is a low-purine, low fat, and moderate-protein diet. Alcohol must certainly be avoided, as well as cigarette smoking. Since these interfere with the body’s ability to effectively eliminate uric acid from the system. Rehydration is also essential since lack of fluids in the body makes the person more prone to have gout attacks.

However, natural treatment for gout, which has proven to be effective by most research studies, should not replace pharmacological treatments. These alternative gout treatments should be used in combination with the medical regimens as prescribed by the client’s physician. Drugs used to manage gout attacks are found to decrease the need for dietary restrictions. Dietary modification and other natural gout remedies are best for people cannot tolerate gout medications.

The Essentials of a Wedding Ceremony Program

Wedding events are once in a lifetime event. It is something special, which will always be remembered not only by the bride and the groom, but also their wedding guests. Everything must be done in order to make it more memorable. One of the effective ways to make the event more special and worth remembering is to make plan well for a wedding ceremony program. Wedding programs provide a record of the wedding ceremony and also create an atmosphere and a sense of belongingness among the wedding guests. Wedding programs provide the guests a wonderful keepsake. These wedding ceremony programs show the order of the entire wedding event, the complete list of songs played during the entire  wedding event, names of the people who have played significant roles during the wedding, and expressing gratitude to all who have witnessed the union of the husband and the bride.

In certain ceremonies, wedding programs are necessary such as in the case of religious or traditional weddings whose guests come from different cultures and have different faith from that of the couples to be wed. Wedding programs are also recommended for big wedding events wherein a large number of guests are invited since these guests are least likely to have an idea regarding the bridal party. In longer wedding ceremonies, wedding programs are also essential. In cases in which both the bride and the groom have a lot of people to thank to, it is best if they plan on having a wedding program. For couples who lack the money and the time to have such programs, they can choose not to have to. However, couples should keep in mind that wedding programs need not to be that expensive and time consuming. A simple wedding program can be planned beforehand to make the event more successful.

When planning for a wedding ceremony program, designs you may choose from include preprinted papers, scrolls, single cards, mini folders with envelopes, etc. The design must perfectly match other wedding designs in terms of the texture, whether formal or informal, font styles and embellishments. Among the many elements, which should be included in the wedding ceremony program, include the complete names of the bride and the groom, name of the celebrant, date, time and place of the wedding event, order of ceremony, song titles, and names of the artists, as well as the name of the wedding party. Optional details, which may also be included in the wedding ceremony program, are the lyrics of each song and hymns of praise, with the composers.

Wedding ceremony programs should also include expressions of gratitude to the people who participated in the wedding ceremony including the hosts and helpers of the reception, as well as the family members and friends who have been part of special services on the day of the wedding. Reminiscing deceased family member or friend can also be included in the wedding ceremony program. It is one way to make the event more special. The couple may also choose to include explanations for each rituals which have been part of the wedding ceremony especially if it involves traditional wedding rites which are not common to most of the wedding guests. Great ways to finish wedding ceremony programs are to include short poems or quotes about love and marriage.

The Bridal Shower Checklist

Over the years, people from all over the world, particularly in the United States, Canada and Australia, practice holding gift-giving parties for brides-to-be in anticipation of their wedding. It was in 1980’s that this custom was first practiced. The purpose of bridal showers is not to provide material goods for the matrimonial home after the wedding ceremony but to provide goods and financial aid so that the wedding may successfully take place. According to some sociologists, the ritual of the bridal shower prepares the bride-to-be and socializes her to traditional roles of a wife. These roles include family cook, homemaker and sexual partner. Usual bridal shower gifts include bedroom and kitchen appliances. Bridal showers are usually held during late afternoons or in the evening. These parties are commonly held several weeks before the day of the wedding, preferably two to three weeks before the wedding.

Traditionally, the hosts for bridal showers are the bridesmaids or other close friends of the bride-to-be. The bride’s future in-laws and other close relatives can still conduct events for the future bride that are not gift-oriented such as bridesmaids’ luncheon and engagement announcement party. Family members seldom host such events since it is not appropriate and quite greedy to ask for gifts for their own relative. Invited guests are usually limited to the close friends and relatives of the couple. However, there are also bridal showers in which more than 300 guests are invited. It depends on the preference of the bride and the hosts.

For some, thinking of bridal shower ideas can be very difficult. However, preparing for events like this can be made easy by making a checklist. Steps for a great shower begins by deciding who will plan for the said event. Usually, the host of the party is the bride’s maid. The bride can work together with the bride’s maid who will host the event to make the event successful. When planning for a surprise bridal shower, the host can ask help from the bride’s family members and from some intimate friends of the couple. Setting a budget is an important part of the planning. The host is more often responsible for the expenses during the event. The host can solicit financial assistance from other friends of the bride and close relatives.

When planning for a bridal shower, it is important to organize the guest list. The event can be an all-girls event, or the host may prefer to invite guests as couples. Making a guest list will make the task of getting contact information, faster and easier. Home addresses and telephone numbers can be obtained with the help of the bride’s family members. Inviting guests for the event can be informal and formal. Inviting guests informally can be made through phone calls and formally, through invitation cards. The invitation card must contain all the necessary information for the said event, most especially when the event is a planned surprise bridal shower. Other important things that must be included in the checklist are the theme, decorations, the venue, date and time, and the games for the occasion.

Symptoms of Bursitis

Small fluid-filled sac known as bursa functions by providing a cushion between bones, tendons and muscles around joint areas. These sacs are lined by synovial membrane with an inner capillary layer of slimy fluid with the same consistency with that of an egg yolk. This helps reduce friction between bones. It reduces friction between articular cartilages of synovial joints during movement thus, allowing free movement. It is at the point of contact of the articulating bones that these joints achieve movement. Bursae are typically saclike structures that are located strategically to alleviate friction in some joints such as the shoulders and the knees, which are filled with fluid. In some instances, one or more bursae may be inflamed. This condition is known as bursitis. With this condition, movement becomes extremely difficult and painful. Moving the tendons and muscles over the affected area may aggravate the inflammation.

This condition commonly occurs after doing extremely strenuous repetitive exercises and physical activities involving excessive pressure such as running, cycling, climbing stairs, and standing for long period of time. Trauma can also cause bursitis. A traumatic injury like accident or a fall may result in vasodilation allowing proteins and extra cellular fluids into the affected bursae leading to inflammation. In some cases, bacterial infection may cause bursitis. The most common areas in the body prone to bursitis include the rotator cuff of the shoulders, elbows, buttocks, hips, knees and ankles.  Other health problems may also contribute to bursitis. Examples of these health conditions are arthritis, thyroid problems, as well as diabetes mellitus. Unequal leg length has also been found to cause bursitis since this condition can lead to irritation to the hip bursa when performing activities. Studies have also found that calcium and crystal deposits cause bursitis. Some cases of bursitis are caused by previous history of surgeries like prosthetic implants especially on the hip.

Diagnosing bursitis involves medical history and a thorough physical medical examination. In some cases, x-rays and blood tests may be indicated. Medical history includes the client’s recent or ongoing activities, as well as joint injuries. During physical examination, the clinician palpates by lightly pressing the affected area. During this assessment, localized tenderness and swelling can be observed. Bursitis is suspected when these manifestations are presented with a history of a recent injury which occurred two to three days prior to the onset of pain and discomfort. X-rays are used to rule out other similar health condition such as abnormalities in the bones, arthritis, and calcium deposits. Blood tests are usually needed to confirm other underlying health conditions like gout and rheumatoid arthritis.

Bursitis symptoms vary from local tenderness and joint pain to stiffness, to a burning sensation around the inflamed bursa area surrounding the affected joint. Pain is the most common symptom of this condition. It may appear gradually or may appear sudden and severe. The pain experienced is usually characterized as dull and sometimes sharp. The pain and discomfort usually worsen during and after every activity and commonly worst a day following the activity. Stiffness of the affected area is commonly experienced early in the morning. There is also restricted or limited movement especially around the affected area. Directly over the inflamed bursa, redness and swelling may be observed. In severe cases of bursitis, there may be loss of function of the affected area. It is important to seek medical help when these symptoms are experienced and bursitis is suspected.

Remedies for Arthritis

Arthritis is considered to be one of the most dreaded diseases that can lead to permanent disability. It is a degenerative joint disease that targets the musculoskeletal system, specifically the joints. There are over 100 different forms of this disease. Among its many common afflictions, include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. Arthritis is a chronic condition that results to damage to joints of the body.  This health problem is often related to aging, People who are above 45 years of age are at higher risk for developing this chronic disorder. Other risk factors for arthritis include older women, smoking and tobacco use, chronic alcohol drinking, injuries, infection whether viral or bacterial, family history, sedentary lifestyle and obesity.

This condition is usually characterized by joint pain and stiffness. Arthritis may also be accompanied with fever and chills.  The joints typically appear swollen and reddish. The pain associated with this condition may appear gradually or sometimes suddenly. Other symptoms associated with this disorder are swollen lymph nodes, anorexia, weight loss, and fatigue. Pain and discomfort usually vary from person to person. During activities, the pain around the affected joints increases, and also after each activity. Common joints affected in arthritis include the hips, knees, wrists, fingers and toes.

The treatment for arthritis solely depends on the specific type of arthritis present. Accurate diagnosis should be done first so that the chance for a successful treatment is increased. Pharmacological treatments for arthritis include NSAIDs or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen, aspirin and naproxen, glucocorticoids, anti-malarial drugs, sulfasalazine, methotrexate, azathioprine, leflunomide, minocycline, gout medications, and cyclosporine. People suffering from this condition can also benefit not only from medications, but also from a number of remedies for pain, which have been proven to be effective by experts.

Over the years, many have claimed the effectiveness of the use of certain extracts from plants and fruits in providing pain relief in the case of arthritis. One example is the mixture of extracts from avocado and soybean. Localized pain and joint stiffness can be reduced and cured through the use of the extract. With this, the use of pain medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs is no longer needed. Avocado and soybean extract function by decreasing the inflammation and providing aid in the healing process. Another remedy for arthritis involves the use of glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate. These have been proven to significantly reduce the pain, joint stiffness, and edema or swelling of the affected areas,

Other natural arthritis remedies include relaxation techniques like meditation and yoga. Acupuncture has been identified by the World Health Organization to be effective in relieving pain and treating at least 40 health problems which include arthritis. People suffering from arthritis can also benefit from various physical therapies including massage, Massage can help improve the circulation in the body, promoting repair and decreasing the stiffness. Maintaining a desirable weight by eating healthily and exercising regularly can greatly help those who are diagnosed with this health condition.

Relaxation Tips for Kids

People can greatly benefit from relaxation, as with meditation and recreation. With relaxation, there is low tension with the person’s emotional state. In this state, there is an absence of arousal, which often comes from sources like anxiety, anger, and fear. Relaxation techniques involve several strategies that help a person attain a state of calmness, and therefore reduce levels of stress. Relaxation techniques have various health benefits. These techniques help in decreasing muscle tension, lower blood pressure, decrease the heart and respiratory rate. The brain structure, which is involved in this mental state, is the frontal and parietal cortex.

Over the years, research studies have been conducted indicating the close relationship between chronic stress and physical and emotional health. The first relaxation technique, which has been proven effective in stress reduction, is meditation. Among the many problems that can somehow be solved by relaxation techniques include anger management, anxiety and panic attacks, heart problems, depression, migraine attacks, hypertension, insomnia, and pain and stress management. Relaxation techniques can improve the overall well-being of an individual. With relaxation, the functioning of the immune system, as well as other systems of the body, is improved.

In the present days, adults are not the only ones who can greatly benefit from relaxation techniques. Even children are exposed to daily stressful situations. Problems at home and in school can significantly affect their well-being. Therefore, teaching them several relaxation techniques is important. Learning these strategies will help them cope up with the tensions that are coming from the inevitable challenges and problems that they may face as they grow up. Good relaxation techniques have been identified by experts, which are designed to suit the needs of children.

Certain relaxation techniques referred to as formal and passive relaxation exercises, are performed while sitting still or lying quietly which also involves minimal movement. Deep breathing can help children relax by decreasing their respirations, heartbeat, and maintaining a normal blood pressure. The child is instructed to inhale and hold his or her breath for a few minutes and release it slowly. Playing the favorite music of the child can soothe the mind and body of this child. A particular tune, hymn, or instrumental piece can fight stress and provide distractions for the child. This will allow the child to relax.

Other relaxation techniques for children include meditation, laughter, toe tensing, massage, imagery, having adequate rest in between activities, e4xposure to binaural sounds, and power nap. Children can also benefit from a technique known as introvert. However, this relaxation technique is oftentimes difficult for children. It requires the child to reflect on the current situation which is causing him or her to be anxious and stressed. The child should exert an effort in identifying the actual cause of the problem. Children can do any relaxation technique whichever they prefer. All these techniques have one thing in common, which is to empty one’s mind, allowing the person to think of nothing, and relax his or her mind and body.

Osteoporosis Treatment

Osteoporosis is known to be the leading cause of fractures in adults above 45 years of age. An estimated 75 million of people across the globe particularly in the United States, Europe and Japan are diagnosed with this condition. Approximately 9 million fractures associated with osteoporosis have been identified, in which 1.9 million are hip fractures and 1.4 million are fractures of the backbone. Osteoporosis is a condition in which there is a significant decrease in the bone mineral density or BMD. It is characterized by a decrease in the density of the bone, thereby decreasing its strength. This leads to bone fragility, subjecting the bones to frequent injuries and fractures. Risk factors of osteoporosis include women who are over 45 years old, have smaller body structures, history of taking certain medications and having close family members who also suffer with the same health condition.

Osteoporosis is a silent disease since no particular signs and symptoms attributed with this condition can be easily noticed. This health condition does not usually produce signs and symptoms. The pain and discomfort present for people who suffer from osteoporosis are due to fractures. These fractures resulted from the decrease in bone density. Lower back pain and discomfort is the most common symptom experienced by people who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis. Those with this condition experience fractures even to simple activities that usually do not cause fractures to healthy individuals. Diagnosing this condition is performed through medical history, diagnostic examinations like X-rays, a thorough physical assessment and evaluation of signs and symptoms which are both previously and recently experienced.

The goal of treatment and management for osteoporosis is to prevent fractures and other injuries that can be a result of a decrease in bone strength and density. Early detection and prompt treatment is important to prevent further injuries associated with this condition. Preventive measures that must be taken by people suffering from this condition include lifestyle changes and strict adherence to therapeutic regimen recommended by the physician. Lifestyle modification involves healthy diet, regular exercise and adequate rest and sleep. Cigarette smoking cessation and abstaining from alcohol are very important steps in lifestyle modification for people suffering from osteoporosis. When planning for physical activities, it must be kept in mind that bones are still fragile and therefore, activities, which must be part of the exercise program, must not be that intense and rigid. The client must be able to tolerate the form of exercise.

There is a range of osteoporosis treatments in the form of medications, which include Actonel, Boniva, Fosamax, Reclast, Evista, Forteo, Fortical, Miacalcin, and Prolia. The diet of individuals with this condition must contain high amounts of calcium and vitamin D. Examples of calcium-rich foods include milk, yogurt, broccoli, cauliflower, salmon, tofu and green leafy vegetables. Calcium supplements are beneficial for cases of osteoporosis. Vitamin D must also be taken since this vitamin aids in the absorption of calcium from the circulation into the bones. A healthy diet and proper exercise are proven to be effective in preventing osteoporosis, as well as in reducing the risks for having fractures in case osteoporosis has already been diagnosed.

Natural Insomnia Treatments

Insomnia is a sleeping disorder in which a person has trouble sleeping or falling and staying asleep on a regular basis. In the present days, more than 30 percent of the population is suffering from insomnia. Studies show that about 55 percent of people who are over 60 years old, frequently experience insomnia. This sleeping difficulty is more often a sign and symptom than a disease itself. Therefore, it is important to report this immediately so that medical experts will be able to identify whether there is an underlying pathological condition causing the sleeping difficulty. This disorder is more common in women, occurring 40 percent more often than in men. Insomnia is classified into three types, transient, acute and chronic insomnia. Difficulty falling asleep is often a symptom of anxiety disorders and clinical depression.

Possible risk factors for insomnia include the use of psychoactive stimulants, fluoroquinolone antibiotic drugs, hormone imbalances, disturbances in the circadian rhythm, abuse of over-the-counter medications or prescribed sleeping aids, poor sleep hygiene, and physical exercises especially to athletes. Certain medical conditions are associated with insomnia. These include Wittmaack–Ekbom syndrome, Periodic Limb Movement Disorder or PLMD, neurological disorders, history of traumatic brain injuries, rheumatoid and other forms of arthritis and thyroid problems. Psychological disorders like major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and dementia can cause insomnia. Nightmares, REM behavior disorder, sleepwalking, night terrors and other disruptive sleep events can usually lead to insomnia.

People suffering from insomnia can benefit from several natural insomnia treatments that have long been proven to be effective. Relaxation is known to effectively increase one’s sleeping hours. Relaxation techniques can also help a person fall asleep easier and faster. People who are more relaxed are more likely to feel energetic and well rested when they wake up early in the morning. Some examples of relaxation techniques include guided imagery or visualization, meditation, yoga and progressive muscle relaxation. Herbal extracts can also be beneficial in insomniacs. Valerian is an herb which is used to manage insomnia. It has been widely used in certain countries including Italy, France, Germany and Switzerland. Other herbs include chamomile extracts, kava, lemon balm, ashwagandha, and passionflower. Traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine are also helpful in people who have difficulties in falling asleep.

Diet also plays a major role in managing symptoms of insomnia. It is important for people who are suffering from this sleeping disorder to consume healthier foods. Caffeine must be avoided as well, together with cigarette smoking cessation. A diet high in carbohydrates such as whole grain breads and cereals before bedtime can help the person fall asleep in no time. However, it is important to keep in mind that food which contains high amounts of sugar should be avoided. People can also benefit from consuming magnesium-rich foods. Music is also considered as an effective insomnia treatment, especially slow and relaxing music. Other common natural treatments for insomnia are acupuncture, aromatherapy, exercise, and acupuncture.

Natural Insomnia Cures

More and more people nowadays are at an increased risk of having insomnia. This is more likely due to the nature of most occupations common in the present days. More than 30 percent of the population is known to experience sleeping difficulties. This condition is twice more common in men than in women. The reason behind this is that women are subjected to hormonal changes unlike men. It is characterized by difficulties in initiating or maintaining sleep. Insomnia causes a person to have an impaired daytime functioning. It affects persons of all ages, although the chances of suffering from this condition increase as a person ages. Three common classifications of insomnia include transient, short term, long term and chronic insomnia. With this, people may manifest daytime fatigue and drowsiness, sudden mood changes, lack of focus and concentration, anergia, anxiety, and headaches.

Usually, insomnia is brought about by stressful situations and factors such as working in different shifts, jet lag, drug abuse, cigarette smoking, and excessive caffeine and alcohol intake. Oftentimes the use of certain medications can lead to insomnia. Examples of these are fluoroquinolone antibiotics and psychoactive drugs or stimulants like cocaine, nicotine, amphetamines, methylphenidate, MDMA and modafinil. Inevitable life events including death of a loved one, separation or divorce, losing a job, and preparing for an examination, make a person susceptible to this sleeping disorder. Another possible cause for insomnia involves certain medications. These may include congestive heart failure and other cardiovascular disorder, neurological problems, mental disorders, sleep apnea, gastro-esophageal reflux disease, hyperthyroidism, arthritis, fibromyalgia, urinary problems, Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

Diagnosing accurately insomnia is vital since the experts need to identify whether there are other possible serious health problems causing this condition. This will also help them know the appropriate treatment and management needed. Successfully treating insomnia includes the combination of pharmacological treatments and non-medical or behavioral treatments, although the treatment for insomnia may also involve only one kind of management. It is also recommended for a person to sleep when already feeling sleepy.  Some research studies suggest that people should sleep no later than 10 in the evening. These natural remedies for insomnia have been proven to be effective especially if applied in combination with certain pharmacological treatments.

Home Remedies for Gout

Arthritis is a cluster of diseases affecting discs and bones in the human body which may oftentimes lead to disability if left untreated. Common forms of arthritis include rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia and gout. Gout accounts for about five percent of all cases of arthritis. This condition is more common in individuals who are in their 40’s and 50’s. It is found to be nine times more common in males than in females. Gout attacks are the result of deposits and build up of crystals which formed as a result of abnormally high levels of uric acid circulating in the blood. The accumulation of these sodium urate crystals is not the reason for the occurrence of the signs and symptoms of gout. Gout attacks produce pain as a result of the irritation of these crystals when these accumulate around joint areas.

Diagnosing this condition can be achieved by a thorough assessment of signs and symptoms and medical history. Blood tests are also beneficial when identifying the uric acid levels in the blood which is the underlying cause of this condition. The increase in uric acid levels in the blood are usually the result of the body’s fault in terms of metabolizing these waste materials or the body’s excessive production of uric acid. There are also certain health conditions which may increase uric acid levels in the body. Examples of these include diabetes mellitus and malignancy such as in cancer.

Gout attacks are usually characterized by local pain and stiffness. The affected area may appear swollen and reddish as a result of an inflammatory process. The pain is often described as gnawing and worse when waking up early in the morning, during and after every activity. The pain and discomfort brought about by this condition may vary from mild to very severe that even the mere contact of a blanket to the affected area produces excruciating pain. It is necessary for the individual experiencing this condition to manage gout attacks to prevent this condition from occurring again. Studies show that people with gout will more likely experience the attack from time to time especially if symptoms are left unmanaged.

There are several home remedies which can be done during gout attacks. When the first sign of pain and discomfort is noticed, it is necessary for the person to immediately stop the activity which is believed to trigger the gout attack. Immobilizing the affected area through the use of splints or straps is also necessary to keep the area from moving, thus making room for healing process to take place. Applying an ice pack or cold compress directly over the area reduces the inflammation. Once the swelling has subsided, it is necessary to perform physical activities in order to keep the affected joints mobile. Range-of-motion exercises are recommended to allow movement of the affected areas. Warm up and cooling down exercises is also beneficial in preventing recurrence of gout attacks.

Since gout causes include diet and having a sedentary lifestyle, people with this condition can greatly benefit from modifying their lifestyle. With this, the individual is recommended to have a healthy balanced diet packed with essential nutrients, as well as vitamins and minerals. Since gout attacks occur due to high levels of uric acid in the blood, it is necessary to avoid foods that contain excessive amounts of uric acid such as seafood, organ meats and certain vegetables like legumes and spinach. Rehydration is also the key to prevent the recurrence of gout attacks. Experts suggest to consume at least eight six-ounce of fluid preferably water, daily. With these strategies, having another gout attack can be prevented.

Hip Joint Pain

Hip pain is a common problem especially to people who reach the age of 40 and above. This condition is very confusing since there are many possible causes for its occurrence. Making an accurate diagnosis is important so that the condition will receive appropriate treatment and management. Traumatic injuries have been identified as the leading cause of hip pain. Other common causes of hip pain include arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis, osteonecrosis, lumbar pain, snapping hip syndrome, strained muscles, as well as hip and stress fracture. Inflammation usually leads to this painful condition. Pain, swelling, warmth and burning sensation are the common manifestations of inflammation.

Oftentimes, the pain brought about by this condition is not felt directly over the hip. In some cases, the pain and discomfort is felt in some other areas near the hip such as the groin or in the middle of the thigh. There area also some cases in which hip pain is only a manifestation of aches and back problems rather than a hip problem itself. Children who frequently experience hip pain may be suffering from developmental dysplasia or Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease. These childhood problems may not usually be very painful but these problems can eventually lead to problems with walking and a delay in growth and development.

It is recommended to immediately seek medical help for sudden hip pain since sudden occurrence of pain in these areas may indicate hip fracture. Older people are more prone to experience hip fractures. In aging, tissues such as muscles, tendons and joints, tend to loss its elasticity, strength and flexibility subjecting it to injuries such as fractures. Some health problems that lead to decrease in bone density like osteoporosis are also risk factors for hip fractures. People suffering with osteoporosis are more likely to have fractures by performing even simple activities that normally do not cause such injuries to others.

It is necessary to do essential measures that will manage hip pain. Pain medications can be taken in order to provide immediate pain relief. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs such as aspirin and ibuprofen are proven to be effective not only in relieving pain and discomfort but also in reducing the swelling. In severe cases of hip pain more potent medications such as corticosteroids and morphine may be used. It is also recommended to place pillows in between the legs when lying on your side during rest. This will help provide comfort.

It is important to keep in mind that although joint pain in hip is common, it is recommended to consult one’s physician when pain lasts for longer periods. Hip fractures are medical emergency and require immediate treatment and management. Home remedies for hip pain must not replace medical management as this condition can lead to serious complications when left untreated.
