A Short Story: The Cure

(Published Version)
Sun Star Davao |  Sunday, September 20th, 2009

All her life, Caridee had been brought up inside the huge walls of their garden. Her father never took care of her; he hired nurses and servants to look after Caridee and yet he never let these servants have conversations with his child. He never allowed Caridee to play beyond the walls of their garden; in fact, she never had the chance to see what kind of life existed beyond that wall. He never showed love and care for his only child. He spent all his time in the basement, immersed in woodcraft.

Caridee’s father said that her mother died in childbirth. The flowers inside the garden were the only friends that Caridee had. She felt alone inside the walls of their garden.

One sunny afternoon, Caridee was in the garden playing alone when suddenly, she heard a crash near the fountain. It was an angel. Its grey wings radiated feathers with tiny crystals on their edges; the crystals seem to be the reason why the angel seems to glow, despite the lack of majesty in the color of its wings. Filled with wonder, Caridee approached the angel.

She walked towards the angel and reached out.

“You’ve touched my wings,” the angel said. “Do you know what that means?”

“No. Did I do something wrong?”

“Not at all, child; but now it means that you have to help me.”

“But I am only a child. I cannot do much,” protested Caridee.

“I understand. I need you to help me find the cure for my wings. My master told me that the cure for my dying wings can only be found in your world,” replied the angel. “I am afraid that one day my master will no longer want my service when he sees that an angel with no wings is useless.”

“I don’t think I can help you, as much as I want to. You see I am not allowed to go outside the walls of this garden. My father is afraid that the outside world will be too much for me to handle,” Caridee explained.

“All right then,” the angel sighed. “But you have to understand that I can no longer last for more than a day, I badly need your help.”

Caridee was overcome with fear for her newfound friend.

“I will try, but I need you to help me climb the walls of our gardens. We’ll wait after my father locks all the doors of the house,” whispered Caridee. “Only after that can we leave.”

At night, Caridee and the angel managed to climb the walls of her father’s garden. Caridee was amazed with all the things that she saw beyond the walls of their gardens. She saw many street lamps, children who rode bicycles and with their mothers running after them.

“I never thought how beautiful it is, to be free,” said Caridee while grasping the hand of the angel. “And to be able to share it with a friend.”

The angel glittered after feeling the touch of the blissful child but they did not waste time and began searching for the cure for his wings which is starting to shed off. The tiny crystals on the edges of its wings had almost gone. The color of the wings was slowly fading away. Caridee was deeply agitated at this sight. A tear fell on her cheek.

“Don’t worry my child. I may not have known you for so long but I want you to remember that whatever happens I will always think of you. You did all you could to help me, and I’ll always be thankful for that,” said the angel while wiping the tears away. “You are my friend.”

Caridee felt very hopeless since they had already spent five hours looking for the cure. She was about to give up all hope when she looked around and saw a beautiful flower at the other end of the road. She hurried ran to the flower, thinking that this could be the cure for her friend’s dying wings. The angel ran after Caridee for he saw that there was a bus swiftly approaching.

“Caridee, wait for me! Please stop! Please!” called the angel.

But Caridee, so eager to get to the flower on the other side of the road, didn’t hear.

The angel felt on his knees and placed Caridee’s motionless body on his lap. He kissed the child’s forehead and cried.

“Did you know that this is going to happen?!” shouted the angel towards the sky. “She was just a child! I should have known, you fooled me.”

There was a flash of light in the sky. Heavy rain began to pour. The angel, still holding on to the motionless body of Caridee, held his face towards the sky and felt the rain touch his face.

“I’ll bring you home my child,” whispered the angel to Caridee.

The angel stood up and did not dare to look behind him but he felt power return. He stretched his white wings with the radiating feathers and the tiny crystals on their edges; the crystals made the angel glow.

Caridee’s father enjoyed the heavy rain with a glass of wine. He was staring out the window when he saw this magnificent creature ascending. He squinted to see better, and was dumbfounded when he saw Caridee being carried towards to sky by this glowing angel.

“My child,” whispered her father. A tear rolled down his cheek. “Haven’t I protected you enough?”

THE CURE

Angel's wings speeding across the sunset sky.
There was once this child who was always longing for love. She was brought up inside the huge walls of their garden. Her father never took care of her; he hired nurses and servants to look after Caridee but he never let these servants have a conversation with his child. He never allowed Caridee to play beyond the walls of their garden; in fact, she never had the chance to see what kind of life exists beyond that wall. He never showed love and care for his only child. He spends all his time in the basement, making woodcrafts.

Her father said that her mother died in childbirth. The flowers inside the garden are the only friend that Caridee had. She felt alone inside the walls of their garden.

Its grey wings radiated feathers with tiny crystals on their edges; the crystals seem to be the reason why the angel seems to glow, despite the lack of majesty of the color of its wings. The angel smiled a smile of bliss. Filled with wonder, Caridee approached the angel.

She walked towards the angel and touched its wings.

"You've touched my wings," the angel said. "Do you know what that means?"

"No. Did I do something wrong?"

"Not at all, child; but now it means that you have to help me."

"But I am only a child. I cannot do much," protested Caridee.

"I understand. I need you to help me find the cure for my wings. My master told me that the cure for my dying wings can only be found in your world," replied the angel. "I am afraid that one day my master will no longer want my service as he sees that an angel with no wings is useless."

"I don’t think I can help you, as much as I want to. You see I am not allowed to go outside the walls of this garden. My father is afraid that the outside world will be too much for me to handle," explained the child.

"Okay then," the angel sighed. “But you have to understand that I can no longer last for more than a day, I badly need your help.”

Caridee was overcome with fear for her new found friend. They were filled with silence for an hour.

"Okay then, I need you to help me climb the walls of our gardens. We'll wait after my father locks all the doors in the basement," whispered Caridee. "Because only after that, will he fall asleep soundly at night.

During the night, Caridee and the angel managed to climb the walls of her father’s garden. Caridee was amazed with all the things that she saw beyond the walls of their gardens. She saw many street lamps, the kids who rides bicycles and with their mothers running after them.

“I never thought how beautiful it is, to be free,” said Caridee while grasping the hand of the angel. “And to be able to share it with a friend.”

The angel glittered after feeling the touch of the blissful child but they did not waste time and began searching for the cure for his wings which is starting to shed off. The tiny crystals radiating on the end of its wings are all gone. Its color is slowly fading away. Caridee was deeply agitated at this sight. A tear fell on her cheek.

“Don’t worry my child. I may not have known you for so long but I want you to remember that whatever happens I will always think of you. You did all you could to help me, and I’ll always be thankful for that,” said the angel in a very calm voice while wiping the tears away. “You are my friend.”

Caridee felt very hopeless since they had already spent 5 hours looking for the cure. She was about to give up all hopes when she looked around and saw a beautiful flower on the other end of the road. She hurried on to the other end of the road thinking that this could be the cure for her friend’s dying wings. The angel ran after Caridee for he saw that there was a bus swiftly approaching.

“Caridee, wait for me! Please stop! Please!” called the angel.

But Caridee is very eager to get on the other end of the road.

Suddenly, a heavy rain poured. The angel, still holding on to the motionless body of Caridee, held his face towards the sky and felt the rain touch his face.

“I’ll bring you home my child,” whispered the angel to Caridee.

The angel stood up and did not dare to look behind him to avoid seeing the horrible sight of his wings but he felt the power from his wings. He stretched his magnificent white wings with radiating feathers and with tiny crystals on their edges; the crystals made an illusion that made the angel seem to glow, and for the first time the angel’s wings have grown so magnificently.

Caridee’s father is enjoying the heavy rain with some wine and was just staring on his window when he saw this magnificent creature. He leaned over to get a clearer picture of the image. He was dumbfounded when he saw Caridee being carried towards to sky by this glowing image.

“My child,” whispered her father. A tear fell on his cheek. “Haven’t I protected you enough?”

MY BEAUTIFUL WINGED CREATURE

An angel's wings formed in the sky.

“Parting is such sweet sorrow that I shall say goodnight till it be tomorrow.”

What is the most painful experience you had in your entire life? I haven’t lived long enough in this world but I had my most painful experience.

First let us define pain: unpleasant sensation, feeling of discomfort, emotional distress, grief, anguish.

In life you have to be sure of everything that you decide for so that in the end when you fail and get hurt, you will not regret.

But I want to talk about the pain I had experienced. Was it death? A bite? A rejection? A disease? A scolding? An insult?

My story begins by describing the angel I met seven years ago.

Unlike any other child with the same age as mine, I neither believe in angels nor on heavens. I only believe on the clouds I see up in the sky, on the birds I hear chirping during our afternoon plays on the garden. In short, I believe only on the things I see, hear and smell.

One day, I met someone who seems to be shining and glowing. It has beautiful grey wings covered with radiating feathers with tiny crystals on its edges. Its smile seems to transpire an image of bliss. The feeling I felt after witnessing that magnificent image evoked a feeling of fervor and desire to approach.

I walked towards the glazing image and to my childish curiosity I touched the stunning wings, the winged creature talked to me. It told me that in return of touching the beautiful wings, I must help it on fulfilling its purpose on earth. I wanted to spend more time looking at the magnificent image and so I agreed on it.

I explained to the winged creature that unlike any other human beings, I have limitations since I am still a child. I do not have the capacity to do things that require a lot of thinking, logical reasoning and physical endurance. The winged creature replied that its mission on earth is simple; prove to its Superior that something exists in this world which can make its beautiful wing turn white. With that, I proudly told it that although it may take a while, I can still make that possible. The winged creature flash a smile which thawed my young heart and made my innocence on things which cannot be felt by the physical senses vanished.

For years, the winged creature stayed by my side all the time. It served as something which I never believed in before – my guardian angel. I grew up with the presence of this beautiful creature that has magnificent glowing wings. I enjoyed doing everything with it, I spent my free time playing with that winged creature.

Days gone by and I can see from its weary eyes a heavy burden inside. The winged creature showed to me its wings. Now, it has only a small portion of grey feathers. I was puzzled for that image should have made the beautiful winged creature happy. Then I realized slowly that it is a prelude to a sad goodbye. A tear fell from my eyes; the winged creature held my hand and put me into its arms. I felt by its touch that it also does not want to go but for a very important reason, it has to.

We spent our days playing all the time, enjoying each others presence. At a young age I thought myself how to bake and cook and offered my baked cookies to the beautiful winged creature. In return, the winged creature would always stay beside me singing songs they usually sing up there on the place where the winged creature described as a blissful place with nothing to worry about. Every time it talked about that place, I could see from its eyes how happy it is to be living there. The winged creature would always sit beside my bed before I go to sleep and read me some stories which had always fascinated me. It would talk about dragons, the rose on the moon, and many other things which I never believed in before.

My life has changes since that winged creature walked into my life.

Then, the day came when its magnificent wings turned all white. I cannot understand how I felt when I saw its radiating white wings. Should I be happy or should I be sad?

The winged creature hugged me and bid goodbye. I cried hard and began to sob. Why? Why does it have to leave me? Now that I have began living a life with its presence!
It just kissed me on the forehead and smiled.

I was out of words for my tears are overflowing. I told the winged creature that when it came I began to believe on things which I never thought to exist before. I cannot even remember all the words I poured out, the only thing in my mind is to make that magnificent winged creature stay.

It did not utter anything at all. The winged creature waved and when it was already flying above me, it shouted: “Your love and care for me turned the color of my wings white. I may have lost the crystals on the corners of my grey wings before but still I am grateful! You love me, and I know that we both know that I love you too! At the right time, we will see each other. I do not know when but I promise I will be with you again. And by that time, I will never leave.”

And so, that’s it. The angel went away carrying with it, my life and my love. I should have done something to make it stay but there are really things in life which cannot be changed no matter how hard we try to. Until this day, as I am narrating this most painful experience I had in my life I am waiting patiently and looking up to the sky, thinking that eventually, a beautiful winged creature with a magnificent white wings would come down for me.
